I decided to subscribe to MTN Fibre X because my previous internet setup in Lagos, Nigeria, wasn’t reliable. My Ethernet connection was extremely slow, only good for basic WhatsApp browsing.

I explored other options like Starlink and Ether 5G, but Starlink was too expensive for me. Fiber X was recommended as the next game-changer, so I gave it a try. This post is a follow-up to my first MTN Fibre X review, where I share my full experience, including what worked well, the challenges I faced, and how I think the service can improve.

Installation & Setup Experience

How Long It Took

From my experience, the MTN Fibre X installation took about three weeks. Normally, installation shouldn’t take more than a week, and in some cases, it happens even faster. In my case, the process sped up after I contacted the NCC, who reached out to MTN and prioritized my case. Before that, it seemed slow because of general delays and mismanagement.

Staff Behavior

The staff assigned to my installation weren’t very knowledgeable. While they were polite, they often didn’t know exactly what to do, which made communication frustrating. I believe this issue comes more from management and training than the staff themselves, as I had to speak to several people from the marketer to the installer to customer service and none seemed fully informed about the process.

Equipment Quality

The equipment itself has been reliable and of good quality. I haven’t experienced any issues with the router or other devices provided.

Hidden Costs

There were no hidden costs during my subscription or installation. Everything was transparent and upfront.

Daily Usage Experience

Speed Consistency

When it comes to speed, MTN Fibre X is very fast. However, the speed consistency isn’t always perfect. For example, you can use it smoothly for several days, and then suddenly, on one particular day, the speed drops.

When I say “slow,” it’s still fast compared to regular mobile data, but I noticed that once more than one device is connected (even just two devices), the speed can reduce temporarily. After some time, the connection usually stabilizes again, and performance improves.

Downtime

So far, I haven’t experienced any major downtime. In fact, I’d say the service has been available almost 100% of the time. I haven’t noticed outages or long disconnections, and the connection has remained stable throughout my usage period of about three months.

Night vs Daytime Speed

I haven’t noticed any difference between daytime and nighttime speeds. The internet remains consistently fast regardless of the time of day, which is a big plus.

Streaming, Gaming & Multiple Devices

When the connection is stable, MTN Fibre X performs very well. I’ve been able to connect up to five phones streaming at the same time on a 50 Mbps plan without issues. Streaming is smooth, and overall performance is strong when there’s no temporary slowdown.

Latency has generally been good. I haven’t experienced sudden latency drops or disconnections. The only thing I’ve noticed occasionally is a slight increase in latency, but it hasn’t been serious enough to affect gaming, streaming, or online calls.

Overall, MTN Fibre X delivers fast and reliable internet for daily use, with only minor consistency issues when multiple devices are connected. When it’s running at full performance, the experience is excellent.

Problems I Faced Using MTN Fibre X

1. Network Drops

One of the major issues I’ve faced is network drops. Occasionally, the connection becomes unstable, especially when more than one device is connected. During these periods, the internet can become almost unusable

In some cases, this slowdown or drop can last up to one or two hours, which is very frustrating if you’re working on something important. I’ve personally experienced this issue about two to three times so far. While it doesn’t happen often, when it does, it’s very disruptive.

2. Billing Confusion

Billing is another area where MTN Fibre X needs improvement. After my service was activated, I was told my subscription would expire on December 24. To avoid interruption, I decided to pay early around December 21.

However, after making the payment, I noticed that my new expiration date was set to January 21, instead of January 24. This means the system billed me from the payment date, not from my actual expiration date.

This is confusing and frustrating because Fibre X is a monthly service, and early payment shouldn’t reduce your subscription period. The lack of clarity around billing makes it feel like there’s a gap in communication and transparency.

3. Lack of Clear Information

Information about MTN Fibre X is surprisingly limited. There aren’t many detailed guides, official explanations, or clear support channels available to users.

Most of the promotion focuses on hype rather than practical information such as how to get help, who to contact, or what steps to follow when issues arise. This lack of proper information makes troubleshooting more difficult than it should be.

4. Power & Backup Issues

MTN Fibre X does not come with a built-in battery. It only works when connected to a constant power source. In a country like Nigeria, where electricity supply is unstable, this is a major drawback.

To keep the service running during power outages, users are forced to rely on generators, inverters, or large power banks. Unfortunately, MTN does not provide an affordable official power backup option.

Even third-party solutions can be expensive — some power cables alone cost around ₦8,000, and you’ll need a power bank of at least 50,000mAh to get meaningful usage time.

This makes it difficult to fully enjoy Fibre X without investing extra money into power solutions.

What MTN Fibre X Is Doing Right

1. Better Stability Than Mobile Data

Compared to regular mobile data, MTN Fibre X is far more stable. With mobile data, you can spend ₦9,000 and it won’t even last a week especially if you’re actively using apps like TikTok, YouTube, or doing online work.

Fibre X solves this problem by offering consistent monthly usage. Instead of worrying about data finishing unexpectedly, you get a stable connection that works throughout the month.

2. Cost Efficiency for Families & Shared Use

One of the biggest advantages of MTN Fibre X is that it allows multiple people to share one connection. For about ₦25,000 per month on the 50 Mbps plan, everyone in the household can connect without needing to buy separate data plans.

When you compare this to a group of family members or friends all buying mobile data monthly, Fibre X becomes much more economical and practical.

3. Speed When It’s Working

When MTN Fibre X is performing at full capacity, the speed is very impressive. The connection is fast, responsive, and suitable for:

Latency is generally good, and the experience is noticeably better than mobile data. While it may not fully compete with Starlink, it’s still very fast and reliable for most users.

4. Good Value for the Price

Considering the speed and overall performance, MTN Fibre X feels undervalued. The pricing is fair for what you get, especially in the Nigerian market.

For users who want stable, fast internet without constantly buying data, Fibre X offers strong value for money.

How MTN Can Improve Fibre X

1. Better Internal Communication

One of the biggest issues I noticed during my installation process was poor communication among MTN staff and their partner companies.

In my case, the reason my Fibre X couldn’t be activated was very simple: the installers failed to submit the installation report. Without that report, activation was impossible.

If there had been clear communication between the installer, customer service, and technical teams, this issue would have been identified quickly. Instead, I had to speak to multiple people, none of whom knew where the problem was coming from. MTN needs to improve internal coordination and staff awareness to prevent situations like this.

2. Stronger Collaboration With Partner Companies

MTN works with third-party installers and marketers, but it doesn’t seem like there’s a proper system where information is shared clearly between all parties.

There should be a central communication process where installation details, reports, and customer issues are properly logged and accessible. This would drastically reduce delays and confusion.

3. Clear and Fair Billing Information

Billing transparency needs serious improvement. Customers should clearly understand:

MTN should ensure that users are billed monthly from their actual expiration date, not from the day they pay early. Clear billing communication would eliminate a lot of frustration and mistrust.

4. Better Power & Backup Options

MTN Fibre X currently has no built-in battery, which is a major issue in Nigeria where power supply is unreliable.

MTN should consider:

This would greatly improve the user experience and reduce dependence on generators and inverters.

Who I Recommend MTN Fibre X For

Based on my experience, MTN Fibre X is best suited for:

These users will benefit the most from the speed, stability, and shared usage Fibre X offers.

Final Verdict: Would I Renew MTN Fibre X?

Yes, I would definitely renew MTN Fibre X.

Overall, it has been very helpful for my work and daily internet needs.

Would I recommend it?

Yes but with conditions.

MTN Fibre X is a good option for people in established areas where the service has been available for some time. However, I would not recommend it for new or remote locations until MTN improves staff communication and installation processes.

For users in remote or newly covered areas, Starlink is currently a more reliable option.
